Acceleration Program – When Is It Recommended?

What is an acceleration program and when is it recommended? It is a program that allows advanced learners to skip a grade or two in order to meet their needs.

Is your child ready for kindergarten? What if your child is not only ahead and ready for Kindergarten, but is also ready for first or second grade? What do you do? Yes, we are talking about children who are ‘smart cookies’. From within this group of ‘smart cookies’, there are however, some who are exceptional and we call them gifted.

Today, in this article, we address kids who gifted. As parents struggle to place their gifted kids in schools that would meet their needs, however, not all schools are ready to address them. For various reasons, like shortage of trained teachers to challenge our advanced learners, or limited finance to accommodate the needs or simply not willing to advocate for this group of children.

Before enrollment, if you suspect you have a gifted child, or an advanced learner, parents ensure that the school you are enrolling your child to have an acceleration program ready for gifted kids. Most schools only look into assessing a gifted child in first grade. Meanwhile, anywhere below first grade, parents may have to get private testings done themselves. Often, the tests are expensive but comprehensive.

Some schools do not recommend such program because these tests are often expensive and additional resources are not always easily available. Even if schools have this program, often students are tested in groups to reduce costs. As a result, the tests that are administered are often not comprehensive enough to prove helpful to the kids.

When is acceleration program recommended? Any time, you think your child needs one. You are the best advocate for your child. Sometimes, you may have the support from the school but not necessarily always.

If you notice your child daydreams most of the school hours, or disinterest in current class situation, or simply feeling bored in school, you might want to talk to the school and look at the possibility of putting your child in an acceleration program. You never know, that decision you’ve made might just be what your child needs.

Science

Science Is Not For Big Boys And Girls Only

We learn about science in school, right? Yes, we used to. However science should not be available only for the big boys and girls in schools. Can a toddler or a preschooler pick up science at home? Yes, why not?

My 3-year-old learned a science lesson today. He is learning how to grow a plant from seeds. We set up what we need using an avocado seed, 2 toothpicks, a small glass, green beans, water, saucer and some cottons.

We set up 2 experiments, One with the avocado seed and the other with the green beans. David helped to set up both the experiments. He got so excited that he shared it with his daddy and most of all, he had so much fun working on them. So, what exactly is David learning through these experiments?

Avocado Seed

Plants grow from seeds. One of the earliest science lesson a young child can learn is knowing that plants grow from seeds. What are living things as well as non-living things? What else can a young child learn from these experiments?

Expand the ability to observe a process.  A young child has limited vocabulary. The process adds new words to what he or she already knows. Watching the process with an adult, he or she is learning to observe and talk about the changes that happen as time progresses to the seeds he or she planted. Meanwhile, for a child who is able to write, it teaches that child how to record an entire process.

What the 5 senses can do? While David learns to observe the seeds, at the same time he also learns about his body parts. For example, he sees with his eyes, he touch the seeds and materials with his hands, he smells with his nose and he hears with his ears.

Science is  not for the big boys and girls only. It should be made available to young children early on. There are so much more they can do and learn even at that young age. It’s never too early for them to start science right at home.

Challenges

Overcome Their Own Challenges

Overcome Their Own Challenges

To Dare Your Child To Dream Big, parents please do not belittle your child’s personal challenges, no matter how insignificant they may seem to you. Do you know your child takes on challenges on a daily or weekly basis? The ability to overcome a challenge, increases your child’s confidence. As he or she overcomes each challenge, his or her confidence arises and look forward to overcome more to find his or her place as a ‘big’ boy or girl.

Milestones Transition Sometimes, this is also how parents decide how ‘big’ their children are getting. As parents and professionals, we call it ‘milestones’, that is how they grow from one stage to the next. As parents, please take note. When your child reaches a milestone and is on the way to achieving the next, please do not stop the encouragement. It may take a while.. do not give up.

Be your child’s biggest cheerleaders, parents. A wise advice to our parents though, be as subtle or as discreet as you can. It would work out better this way.

What does it mean to belittle a child’s challenge? Sometimes, parents think whatever the child is doing is just simply wasting time. So they discourage the action. And if the child ignores it, parents put their children down in the hope to stop it. In this case, the act did not stop the child from trying again. It simply destroys the child’s worth. It is clearly not the best intent for your child.  If a parent disagrees, redirection is a better choice to replace belittling.

Personal Story

David spent several months trying to hop on the sofa with his knees while his hands stretched out on the sofa. Initially, I did not know what he was trying to do. If I thought he was goofing around, I could have stop it. But, he wanted to get it right. When he finally did it, he was so proud. He  knew he achieved something ‘big’ because he overcame it. Another ‘big boy’ moment.. to him.

Why is it important for parents to encourage their children to overcome their own challenges? Every time a child overcomes a challenge, significant or not, it gives a sense of achievement to that child. The more they overcome their own challenges, the greater confidence they have. The more they will learn to welcome challenges in your lives as they enter adulthood. It teaches our future young adults not to give up in the face of their personal life challenges. It also takes away the fear as they overcome the challenge one at a time.

Parents, do not take on the challenge and solve it for your children. Let them own their challenges and allow them to solve it themselves. They will turn around and thank you in the future.

Benefits From Learning Phonic Early

Did you know the benefits from learning phonic early are tremendous? Your child picks up words, a whole new language, early reading and eventually spelling. It gives confidence and prepare your child well ahead of time for school. We share an account of how learning phonic early helps David where he is now.

Phonic
Benefits from learning phonic early

David typed this on the computer screen yesterday . It amazed me how close he was to getting the spelling correct. He is now 3 years and 3 months old.

When David was 2, he became interested in numbers and alphabets and the sound that each letter made. He started viewing videos that taught alphabets’ sounds. It was his early journey in learning phonic. He watched videos from ABC Mouse and YouTube.  What kept him learning was his interest in it and it was fun for him.

Today, I see the benefits of David, learning phonic early on. It helps in his reading. He actually read at first grade when he was 2.5 years old. It helps in picking up words and now in his spelling at 3.

It’s never too late to start learning phonic. Whether your child picks up phonic earlier on or later, it’s important to begin now. You know you’ll reap the benefits like David did if you begin today.

As I’ve always said, never force learning. Know where your child is at and pick up from there. Every child is unique and special. It’s important to know your child and knows what will help and what would not.

Parents, please take heed. Remember you are the one who lead, guide and inspire your child. They need direction not discipline when it comes to their learning. Keep trying and don’t lose hope.

One day you will see and reap the benefits of your perseverance, just like potty training, do you agree?
